Beats headphones are great, they sound fantastic and have great colors and design. They are so good that you can’t help but wear them everywhere, and that means they get dirty. So now what do you do? They may still sound good, but dirty headphones never look right, but you also don’t want to damage them.

Don’t worry, here are 4 simple steps showing how to clean Beats headphones that get the job done quickly and make sure they’ll be as good as new when you are finished.

Step 1: Know what type of Beats you have

With on-ear headphones like the Solo 3, you can easily see when they become dirty, both around the ear cups and in general. You should clean them when you can see dirt, if you do this regularly and don’t let the dirt build, it makes it much faster and easier to clean them each time.

But of course, there are other types of beats such as the Studio Buds and Fit Pro. These in-ear type headphones are a little different, as you may not always notice how dirty they get. Using dirty in-ear headphones can cause problems, so as well as looking after your devices, cleaning regularly keeps your ears healthy too. Examine your bud-type headphones every time you use them, if the earpiece looks dirty, clean them.

Step 2: Prepare for Cleaning

To learn how to clean beats headphones we begin with the basic preparation. Remove the headphones from any charger or cable, you don’t want them plugged in to anything. Then get your cleaning gear together, you will need:

  • Warm Water
  • Cotton Buds (Q-Tips)
  • Alcohol Free Wipes (such as Clorox)
  • Soft, Lint-Free Cloth

Then remove the earpads for on-ear headphones if you are cleaning that type of headphone.

Step 3: Removing dust and loose debris

To remove any dust or loose debris, wipe the Beats all over with a soft dry cloth. This is the only method the manufacturer recommends, however if you have been wearing your Beats at the gym or on outdoor adventures, you may struggle to clean everything in this way.

In most cases, wiping down and then putting the headphones back together will be enough.

Step 4: Dealing with stubborn grime

If simply wiping everything is not getting the job done, you need to look for some other approaches. Begin with your cotton buds, dip in warm water and use them to get into the hard-to-reach areas to remove all the dirt. This is also the best way of cleaning inside any bud type headphones, just don’t use force as this can damage the speaker diaphragm. Just damp the cotton with water, you don’t want to flood the area, the water is simply there to help lift the dirt.

For on-ear headphones like the Solo 3, you can also wipe them down with an alcohol-free wipe such as Clorox. Don’t be tempted to use alcohol or hydrogen peroxide-based wipes, as these will remove the paint from your Beats.

Don’t use a lot of pressure and avoid scrubbing, just take your time and keep going until the headphones are free of dirt and grime. If you use wipes or water, put them aside to dry naturally.

Step 5: A final wipe down

Finally, once the headphones are clean and dry, take a soft cloth and give your headphones a wipe down to remove any residue from the wipes, dampness and so on. Don’t ever use paper towels or other abrasives, they will damage the surface of your headphones.

Now you know how to clean Beats Headphones, you can keep yours shiny and new, and the good thing is, this method can be used with any headphones, not just beats. If you want to find a new pair of headphones for yourself, check out our rundown of the best headphones on sale right now.

A Bishop

I’ve been a music fan since I was old enough to talk, but it was in the 90s when I took that love of music and turned it into a career as a DJ. Since then, I have found myself more than a little obsessed with equipment, and as a DJ, few things are as important to me as the headphones I use. Whether listening to a podcast at the gym or using them professionally, I’ve tried hundreds of headphones at every budget, and continue to try newer models as they appear. The search for the perfect headphone is never ending, but I keep looking, and hope that you find my insight and opinions useful in your search too.
